The Double Sock Scholarship Program

The family and friends of Dave “Opey” Thomas are pleased to announce the 3rd “Double Sock” Scholarship Program for eligible boys and girls of all ages for the 2024-25 season.

What is the Double Sock Scholarship Program?

The program provides financial assistance for children participating in Learn To Skate, Little Penguins, and hockey programs. The scholarship has generously funded opportunities for 26 young participants in the skating programs at the MARC.

Who is eligible for the Double Sock Scholarship Fund?

The program is available to all boys and girls involved with ice hockey and figure skating programs at the Meadville Area Recreation Complex

When does the season begin?

Learn to Skate is a six week program that is scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 7th. There will be six sessions during the 2024-25 season.

The Little Penguins program is a ten week program sponsored by the Pittsburgh Penguins and Sidney Crosby. The start date for this program is Saturday, January 24th. The Little Penguins program provides equipment, skates, sticks, and a Little Pens jersey to each participating child. Once a child completes the Little Penguins program, they are eligible to join the program for the second half of the season.

About Dave Thomas

Opey Thomas was a life-long member of the Meadville community. Opey was a CCYHA coach, a Meadville Recreation Authority board member, and a board member for Meadville Bulldog Hockey. His son, Rick, came through the ranks of CCYHA and the Meadville Bulldogs. Opey’s daughter, Sarah, was a figure skater at the MARC. Opey was passionate about the MARC and about providing opportunities for Meadville youth to skate and play hockey.
